soundON Festival of Modern Music: The Stories We Tell curated by Franklin Cox and Christopher Adler
January 10-13, 2019
The Athenaeum Music & Arts Library
1008 Wall St, La Jolla, CA
Curators Franklin Cox and Christopher Adler chart the evocative domain between language and music with an adventurous collection of the newest music that is the signature of the annual soundON Festival. Instrumental music with strong narrative elements ranges from Gleb Kanasevich’s contemplative Solo, to Jason Eckardt’s explosive and virtuosic tour-de-force After Serra, to radical deconstructions in a brand new work by Franklin Cox, commissioned by the Athenaeum Music & Arts Library. From guest composers Sungji Hong and Derek Keller, music tells stories with both sound and visual image. And language itself becomes the subject in works by Erin Gee, where the sound of speech is translated into musical sound, and Lei Liang’s Aural Hypothesis which is based on the gestures of Chinese calligraphy. soundON favorite Stephanie Aston returns to perform a duo by Kate Soper, with NOISE flutist Lisa Cella, in which the musical medium explodes language to its fullest expressive potential. And percussionist Morris Palter will perfrom selections from Christopher Adler’s recent collection of settings of Russian transrational futurist poetry in visually-evocative scores.

soundON Festival of Modern Music: Thresholds curated by Colin McAllister
January 9-12, 2020
The Athenaeum Music & Arts Library
1008 Wall St, La Jolla, CA
In the Confessions, St. Augustine wrote about the distentio animi, the distension of the mind that refers to its stretching out in relation to past and future, a three-fold present known in memory, attention, and expectation. This is an analogue to what musicians would call “performative time,” or perhaps, what Gabriel Motzkin calls “abnormal time,” a transcendent state that can be experienced only at those rare moments when the normal, everyday world loses its meaning, thus making this kind of time more authentic. The 13th edition of the soundON Festival of Modern Music explores these rarified states, these journeys to thresholds of space, time, memory and perception.
This year we welcome five visiting composers: Anthony Tan (who will also perform his aptly titled Endlessnessnessness for solo piano and live electroncs), Lukas Schulze, Stuart Saunders Smith (premieres of solo works for flute and guitar), Vera Ivanova and Derek Keller. We celebrate Mark Osborn and Nathan Brock, two old friends who have gone beyond the threshold into eternity, but whose life and music continue to resound with us. We will explore the work of Argentinian-Uruguayan composer Graciela Paraskevaídis, in whose compositions “the basic coordinates of every musical occurrence—time and silence—are experienced as sanctuaries of solidarity and resistance, and are as well an origin of an intense hope.” Saturday evening’s concert features two large ensemble works, Alberto Posadas’s Tres pinturas imaginarias, and Gerard Grisey’s monumental Vortex Temporum, which explores “three gestalt sounds, three spectra, and three archetypes of time.”

NOISE
Noise (San Diego New Music) will be performing their first concert of the new year at the La Jolla Athenaeum. The classic graphic-score composition December, 1952 by Earle Brown sets the stage for three open form works from the late 1970’s, Michael Nyman’s Bell Set No. 1, a minimalist take on church bell change-ringing, John Cage’s Inlets for amplified conch shells, and Stuart Saunders Smith’s deconstructed pop song Notebook.
Two works by celebrated composer and Bang On A Can clarinetist Evan Ziporyn bring a cross-cultural perspective to the evocation of the natural world through music: Fragrant Forest from the Balinese-inspired Pondok suite for solo piano, and the brand-new virtuoso flute solo Speak At-man! meant to evoke the Hindu universal consciousness ‘atman’.
Rounding out the program is Charles Amirkhanian’s raucous text-sound composition Church Car and Alvin Lucier’s meditative Silver Streetcar for the Orchestra for solo percussion.
